Strictly Ballroom (1992). I love this movie, and one of the things I love about it is how hard it is to characterize. It moves from romantic comedy to fantasy to slapstick and all the way to farce and then re-enters romantic comedy as smoothly as some of its own superb dance numbers.
Check out the comment at the imdb page for this movie. The commenter is absolutely correct: the movie is just packed with fine moments, performances, and top movie production.
And if you're not a fan of ballroom dancing, don't be put off by the title; part of the idea is that a young competition dancer wants to move beyond 'strictly ballroom' and perform his own audience-pleasing steps. You will see some very fine dancing, not least a paso doble by the great Antonio Vargas.
There are some movie scenes that I will simply never forget, and cannot watch too often. One is the scene in this film in which Scott and Fran practice to the song Time After Time on the roof of the studio. Brilliant, and moving.
See this movie, please. It's wonderful.
