Trying to find a cheaper way to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel, state officials yesterday offered a new option: a narrower version, with Alaskan Way above it widened to six lanes. “NO WAY.”
Let’s get rid of the Viaduct and that polluting route through Seattle. The most densely populated area in the state must take this situation in hand and get rid of the Viaduct. Now with the planned development of SODO and the increase of cruise ships it’s time to open the waterfront to the most beautiful and best economical use. Make Alaska Way into a Parkway. Reroute traffic from US 99 to 4th Avenue like it used to be. Now you will see how fast public transportation will take hold. The monorail will be jam packed, busses will be standing room only and light rail will still be the yellow brick road to nowhere. Interstates 5 and 405 will grow into total gridlock. Then and only then will the people get on the public transportation wagon. Consultants are only partially correct. They don’t live around the Viaduct or its proposed modified successor. Downtown Seattle is now the most powerful voting block in the City. It’s time to take hold of the reins of power and take care of Seattle. Let’s fix the Waterfront and seawall first and then fix the Mercer/Broad Street Mess then the NE 45th/I-5/SR 520 Interchange and then…………
