This column appeared in this morning's PI. Hubert G. Locke has written about some very significant happenings in Montgomery, Alabama since 1861. First, secession; second Civil Rights; and third, a quieter revolution taking place in the public libraries where 10 percent or more of the population falls below the national poverty level. The Gates Foundation Library Initiative has installed computers in these libraries. Mr. Locke explains how in community after community people are now bridging the digital divide. "But one also cannot help being pleased in a period in our society in which there is so little that is positive or uplifting to take note of that such a momentous change is occuring." I couldn't find the link to this PI article this morning.
