As Hillary is planning her visit to the troops in Afghanistan, Bush is informed and cannot be outdone by a mere woman, let alone a democrat, he quickly polishes up his pistols, mounts his waiting steed and swiftly slips unnoticed into Iraq in the middle of the night. His two hour appearance among the officer corps, I'm sure, was limited to the secure area around Baghdad International airport, protected by 30,000 well armed enlisted men. I was amoung the troops at Cam Rhan Bay when President Johonson visited. As we stood on the taxiway at parade rest, Air Force One slowly came in from the north and landed on the airstrip, taxied on down to the 30,000 troops waiting for review. General Westmoreland, his staff and some Vietnamese general were already there waiting for Johnson. He was dressed in kahkis and the secret service was shitting bullets with all the armed GIs, Vietnamese and Koreans standing out in that sweltering 105 degree day some 36 years ago. He didn't eat dinner with us but kept the lie fresh in my mind for the remainder of my tour. I was replaced by a draftee, fresh out of bootcamp. One of the first of 500,000, as I remember.
