Saddam's trial will probably be held over the period from now until the elections are over here next November. Every day we will be reminded of some small fact that comes out of the investigation to keep our minds off the problems in this country. Our eye will be taken off of the goal of the Democrats winning control of the US government. Don't be fooled, Saddam's guilt is allready well documented and the resulting trial will be rehash of known facts. The trial will make a thousand lawyers and a thousand generals rich beyond avarice. What we really need to do is keep Saddam safe and alive until he dies of natural causes. We can realize a massive amount of information over the years from this despot. The pundits are now congratulating each other and speculating on what will happen next. Even Wolf Blitzer is showing his inability to be specific. Saddam began his life homeless and abandoned and he has now returned to that position. Only time will tell.

Do the red "Hammer and Sickle" flags the people are waving on television in Baghdad mean anything?

That picture will charge your battery, Bremer.

Saddam Hussein, despot, 1979 to 2003. Saddam rose from poverty to dictator and followed the monarchy that ruled Iraq after the Ottoman Empire and the British.

From 1922 until the nationalization of oil production, the British tried to rule Iraq through the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty which allowed the British to maintain indirect control of Iraq without expense.

One can imagine that it is only a matter of time until the clerics in Iraq follow the path of Iran and assume control of the government. Why not act now and not follow the same path as the British did in Iran.

The Shah of Iran ruled from 1926, along with the British and Americans, until the Ayotollah took power in 1979. One bright spot in Iranian politics was Prime Minister Mussaddiq but he was assassinated in 1953 with the help of the CIA.
