Survey: Insecure passwords can be costly for companies. According to a survey by Rainbow Technologies Inc., relying on user names and passwords to secure data and applications can be costly and risky for companies. [Computerworld News]
Human Factors Engineering has tried to address the idea that things people use need to be made more "comfortable" and "appropriate" to the innate capabilties of the human body. And I would extend that to include the human mind. Passwords and password policies tend to work at cross purposes to the capabilities of the human mind, and generally human behavior. So, what to do? I think there needs to be refinements in how we ask computer users to maintain security on their computers.
