Intel sneaks out 2.4GHz Prescott. Boxed and certified for sale around the globe [The Register]
This reminds me somewhat of the MMX debacle. Speeds were going up, but real performance was iffy at best. The Pentium Pro was the speed king, no question. But it was expensive so Intel's smoke and mirrors led to the whole argument for MMX extensions being a good differentiator for peformance. The Pentium 166 was the last speed bump, everything after that went to 200, 233, 266 MMX's came in long enough to tide them over to the lower cost Pentium Pro with MMX extensions (more or less the Pentium II). Don't you dare by a Prescott processor. Stick with the current 3.2Ghz cpus, you are much farther ahead.
