Report: Mac OS X 10.3.3. Readers talk about backing up to SMB share, problems with disk images, unrecognizable CDs, booting Power Mac G3, and a lengthy exchange with Symantec Tech Support about LiveUpdatereader. [MacInTouch]
This article saved me some big troubles logging into or Workgroup FileShare on an OS X 10.3.3 Xserve. After the update a coworker who updated his desktop to 10.3.3 couldn't login. Our fix was to delete his account on the Xserve, then recreate it and put all the permissions back on in the right places. At home, I didn't want to do that because I rarely try mounting a disk using AFP. I try to use SCP or SFTP as much as possible. But I was totally locked out from trying to login over AFP. Apparently it all hinges on a hidden preferences file in the home directory "Library" folder. The writer of the forum email did a great job of identifying the offending Key entry in the preference file. Somehow the 10.3.3 update corrupted or harmed that preference file.

MSBlast epidemic far larger than believed. Researchers previously estimated that the virus infected hundreds ofthousands of computers. The latest information from Microsoft indicates that the worm compromised millions of systems. [CNET News.com]
This is just frightening. Virus attacks are getting larger and more out of control with each wave of attacks. It would have been nice if Microsoft had reported numbers earlier as they were being collected. Instead they are reporting it now that they are doing all their hand waving and product announcements for future versions of Windows. I hope that WinXP SP2 comes out soon. There needs to be an attempt made today to button down the OS.
