When the Cashier Is You. New Yorkers know how to swipe a MetroCard. Pretty soon they will want to transfer that skill to groceries. By William Grimes. [New York Times: Technology]
I'm looking forward to the day when my Tops SuperMarket finally dumps that crap seasonal half aisle just past lane number 10 and puts in a two station self-checkout lane. It would help me out on a Sunday morning. There's usually only two lanes open, and the 15 items or less line is always full. The minute they open the third lane everybody clears through in about 2 minutes tops. I can fit all my groceries into one carry basket. It's always more than 15 items, but that whole thing would fit easily on the counter at a self-checkout line.
