The Biggest Jolt to Power Since Franklin Flew His Kite. Companies say they are closing in on the goal of producing relatively inexpensive superconducting wire. By Barnaby J. Feder. [New York Times: Technology]
My old favorite subject going back to 1986, high temp superconductors! This article mentions my sentimental favorite American Superconductor (whom I have kept an eye on through the stockmarket). The fortunes of these kinds of companies have risen and fallen, but American Superconductor still gets some bones thrown its way through government contracts (the Navy being the prime customer). Now, the second generation nickel based wire is bringing costs down and may be the breakthrough for wider application of superconducting wire.
