Competition Is Heating Up as Projectors Go Digital. Sony has developed a new high-end digital movie projector but it's still not certain there's a market. By Eric A. Taub. [New York Times: Technology]

Wow, this article claims the TI 2K digital projector is "better" than film. Now there's a Sony 4K projector in the works and Eastman Kodak has a 4K projector project as well. Man! what an embarrassment of riches this is going to be. I do observe however that Paolo Cherchi Usai's admonition that 35mm film has been around over 100 years. The projectors that play it back still work with films made back in 1905. We need to get to that level of commoditization, standardization before digital cinema becomes ANYTHING like a standard in movie theaters. There's just too many competing standards and new technology coming out every week for any one technology to win out right now.

Intel to open code for booting up PCs, servers [CNET News.com]

Any progress in the evolution of PC's is a good. Thing boot up times help make people MORE willing to turn off their computer or restart them when things go wrong or software gets updated. In the words of the inimitable Martha Stewart, "It's a good thing". I'm looking forward to this next logical step in the BIOS software arena. Hopefully I can one day buy a laptop with Intel's best power-saving chipset to date and the EFI hardware interface.
