Sony selects Blu-ray for PlayStation 3. Up yours, HD-DVD [The Register]
Amazing isn't it that Sony continues to introduce new formats that conflict with industry standards. Doesn't this smell a lot like the old DAT vs. MiniDisc or MiniDV vs. DVCam problem? Why do they keep on doing this? And I read recently they are coming out with a scuccessor to the MiniDisc,... HD MiniDisc for personal music players. WTF! How is one company able to absorb the costs of the developments of these new formats and never achieve any market share over and over without bankrupting the whole company? I guess we'll never know. My feeling is they will have to maintain backward compatibility just like the article states and that they will achieve this by providing the first dual-head Disc Reader for mass consumption.
