some hypotheses (conspiracy theories):

). islamic fundamentalism, like texas fundamentalism, is the product of oil money. the oil companies invested in religion in order to de-stabilise workers' movements and to counter materialist philosophies. (i think you could document this as a phenomena, if not necessarily causal, pretty easily at the LBJ... {baptists would cut the tops off their crosses [see huxley/brave new world] and spray glade on an icon of rockefeller if they were at all reflective in their religion}.

). stalin was a capitalist stooge. the comintern worked hard to destroy revolutions. consider mao's experience. the communist party destroyed the wobblies in america and the wobblies had something relevant to say and the communist party didn't.

). after the second world war the catholic church, zionist interests, and american capitalists of the nazi loving prescott bush stamp work out a deal to hide fascists in europe and to hunt the left wing in america (see i.f. stone). for them jews, ben hecht (sp?) f'r instance, this meant selling out their own. quin says: "one of the first things christian and jews learn is that it's alright to sell out your own. abraham and issac. bobbie dylan said this too. then he turned around and sold out his own." interestingly it was the jesuits who cracked under the shame first.

). materialist philosophy is now taught, in america, only in good, expensive schools where it is likely to be of service to the powerful.

). america will be a nicer place when resurrected is talk of a four hour day.
