Among the large adware companies that have done so much to ruin the Internet, observers have generally considered WhenU the one that's come the furthest in changing the spywarish ways that got it started. But be that as it may, many readers doubt WhenU actually gets permission from all those who find it installed on their computer, including one reader who recently had that experience herself.

"After weeks of suffering ads popping up all over the place by WhenU, I was determined to uninstall it," the reader wrote. "This in itself turned into something of an obsession, because lo and behold I can find nothing to uninstall. I have sent emails -- some not very pleasant, I must admit -- but to no avail. My computer is now scheduled for a visit to a wizard I know, who hopefully will be able to solve this problem. Not without cost to myself, I hasten to add."

The reader had only one suspect for how the WhenU adware wound up on her computer. "All I can think of is that it came from a screensaver I downloaded," the reader wrote. "The screensaver certainly didn't say anything about other material being installed - in fact, it said something about being a safe site. WhenU didn't show itself until about two days later and I know I didn't agree to anything. I deleted the screensaver, it was impossible to find the files to delete WhenU."

The reader finally got an anti-spyware cocktail that completely rid her system of WhenU, but she remains angry about the whole experience and WhenU's total silence to her pleas. "I did email WhenU, after days of trying to delete it," the reader wrote. "But they were very clever about hiding their contact information, and details on their website were very sketchy to say the least. They never replied to any of my attempts to contact them. How can a company get away with this? I have always been careful about installing anything, kept my anti-virus software up to date and until this suffered no problems. I find it hard to believe it's legal for them to behave this way."
