Notes from the Metaverse
Writing, working, open source

While I'm sure you all have been losing hours and hours of sleep wondering whether Notes would ever update again, and what's been up, I'm going to tell you anyway.

I'm happy to say I've been writing other things, for money even. I spent much of the year co-authoring Cygwin in Action for Manning publications, which is coming soon. Two weeks ago, I started work on SUSE Linux Unleashed for Sams (please ignore the January release date Powell's talks about, it'll be later than that, but please feel free to pre-order!).

There was also that bloody election campaign, which took up far too much time, but that's all done now, isn't it? Except for the war, which will only get worse.

With considerable help (and prodding) from The Love of My Life, my office no longer looks completely like a storage shed. The books, with some exceptions, are now on shelves, you can walk in the walk-in closet, and I don't have to climb over boxes to open the drapes.  Wish I had a picture for you, but I never did get around to buying a digicam.

Except for a couple days in Madison, I never left town all summer, because of the writing, but that's OK. Milwaukee's a fine place.

Hope to be around for awhile, now. Hope your lives have been interesting too.

Last week, it was just wonderful to hear (from DesktopLinux.com) that the wonderful people at SSC (who also bring you Linux Journal) were bringing out a new print magazine aimed at new Linux desktop users. The first issue of Tux Magazine will be on newsstands everywhere February 1. Yesterday, they posted the editorial calendar for the first year on their Drupal-based site, which sounds most interesting.

Tux, like the lamented Maximum Linux, will carry a CD with every issue, so it's a little pricier than the others in the field. But I expect you will get maximum value. Its editor, Marcel Gagne, writes the Cooking With Linux column for Linux Journal. He's also written a couple of books I wish I had, but that's life.

Anyway, visit the very neat, clean site, take the current poll, read all the plans, then subscribe.
