11 days to go

I was listening to BBC radio this morning when yet another of their incessant adverts set me off again. And no, it wasn't the one about Jobbie William's forthcoming takeover of Radio 1. No, it was a blatantly inaccurate promo for Five Live's coverage of the new football season.

Coming soon on your national sports radio station, exclusive live radio coverage of the premiership's top games. And it all kicks off again on August 16th.

Well, let me tell you something, you ignorant sassenachs. It kicks off on August 9th. With real passion, players without pony-tails and no namby-pamby managers. None of this Alex Ferguson, Graeme Souness, Gordon Strachan nonsense. Oh... wait a minute, something's gone wrong here...

And if it can live up to last season with Celtic and Rangers battling it out into the final minutes of the season there is a lot to look forward to. As a Scot with an Irish accent living in England, I have to put up with a lot of stick about my passion for Scottish football. The most common jibe is that "there are only two teams in Scotland" and so there is no real competition and the league is boring. Do I really need to point out that there is only one team in the English league and they win it every year, as everyone else goes bankrupt around them.

 Fourteen-to-one
It seems that after over a year of constant bickering, the SPL are starting to look forwards for once and there is a proposal to increase the league from 12 to 14 teams. However, after the Falkirk debacle, will they be able to find two teams who are deemed to be worthy of their exclusive club?

I have to say that I strongly felt that Falkirk should have been promoted at the expense of Motherwell. After all - this was the second time they had been in this position, and they did seem to have some sort of a plan to meet the stadium regulations. And now, instead, they will be playing in the 1st Division again. And, to add insult to injury they will be playing their home games at Ochilview.

 Early bhoys
Celtic kick-off ahead of everyone else. They are playing in the Champions League qualifying rounds and the first game is tomorrow night. Good luck bhoys - and lets hope for another successful European run like last season.
