Johncock boots six goals to sink Saints
hearld sun

ADELAIDE half-forward Graham Johncock kicked six goals as the Crows boosted their AFL top-four hopes by thrashing St Kilda 22.11 (143) to 13.8 (86) at AAMI Stadium here today.

Johncock kicked three early goals to help the Crows to a 20-point quarter-time lead, and they were always in control, extending the advantage to 27 points at half-time.

The Saints remained in touch until the 20-minute mark of the third quarter, before the Crows booted six unanswered goals in time-on to end the contest and go to the last change leading by 64 points.

Chris Ladhams started the six-goal barrage, with two long left-footed bombs from 50 metres, while Johncock capped it off when he kicked his sixth after the three-quarter time siren.

The Crows were well-served by skipper Mark Ricciuto, while wingman James Begley - playing against his old side for the first time - and Brett Burton also got plenty of the ball.

Up forward, Adelaide was also dominant, with Ian Perrie, Scott Welsh, Ladhams and Burton booting three goals each and Andrew McLeod kicking two goals, both from sensational snaps.

In defence, veteran Ben Hart kept Saints skipper Aaron Hamill out of the match and Ken McGregor prevented Nick Riewoldt from having a major influence.

Midfielders Robert Harvey and Stephen Powell were two of the Saints' better players in what was a forgettable match overall for the visitors.

St Kilda was not helped by some poor discipline, with two of Adelaide's goals coming directly as a result of 50-metre penalties and another scored from a free kick paid downfield to Welsh.

It came after the half-time siren, when Saints goalsneak Stephen Milne was reported for striking McLeod in the head with a raised forearm.

The only positive feature of the loss for St Kilda was that Nathan Burke played his 322nd AFL match for the club, breaking Stewart Loewe's club record.
