Why did Google acquire Prya Labs (Blogger.com)
Perhaps because Blogspace, that segment of cyberspace dedicated to blogs, has exploded over the last five years. Blog content has started to appear, some would say contaminate, Google search pages. Blogs by their very nature tend to be updated frequently and heavily linked - both attributes are heavily weighted in the Google search and ranking algorithms. Blog hits on Google searches can be annoying because most tend to yield some blogger's reactions to yet another blogger's statement. Following the links is like pulling on an endless thread. Microdoc News has an interesting analysis of how a story or meme moves though the blogosphere. If you would prefer a slightly less pedantic analysis you might read Anatomy of a Meme.
So my bet is that Google soon will move the Blogspace into a separate searchable category area all of its own, just the way it did with NewsGroups after it acquired Deja News.
But this begs the question - Why did Google acquire Pyra. Deja News was the main repository for NewGroup content. Pyra doesn't own or even maintain a significant amount of the Blogspace.
Dave Winer speculates.
Anyone else got any opinions?
