Spam and Plaxo. In desperation I have changed my primary email adress and I plan to retire my current email address which has become hopelessly poluted with spam. My new email will hopefully never appear on the web or in anyone's "marketing" database and so will stay more free of spam.

Plaxo is an application that I am using now to both notify all of my correspondents of the changed email as well as over time stay up to date with theirs. It's very nice (so far) and it's free. If you know me then you probably received a Plaxo notice from me or will soon be.

However...Plaxo is free. Sounds like a good thing, no? Recalling my postings on what we are willing to pay for software and how product developers are supposed to survive, I would say that I would prefer to pay, thank you very much.

Why? It would seem to me that running a service like Plaxo is fairly expensive; I have seen no ads (good!) and other apparent revenue sources, so the likely scenario, sadly, is once I get fully adicted to this nice service, they will go out of business. I hope I am wrong, but I think it's why we need a new model for software businesses.
