Since I have a bunch of projects in progress on my trusty 3-year-old G4, I need to be able to get to that stuff while I'm spending a week over on my Linux machine with its brand-new Ximian XD2 desktop. I found a nice, graphical tool for OS X called NFS Manager which installed and ran very nicely. I do have to set up a root account and hack into NetInfo to set up some domains to share. I'm already running netatalk on the Linux machine, so I can grab files easily from the Linux file system... [www.gulker.com - words and pictures from Silicon Valley]

The Computer History Museum -- home to one of the largest collections of computer-related artifacts, documents, film, and photographs in the world -- is planning AppleLORE, the second in its series of commemorative events to capture and preserve stories from "notable information age companies." An invitation-only event slated for Sept. 13, AppleLORE will celebrate Apple's 1976-1993 contributions to the computer industry. The event will be held at the Computer History Museum's new location (1401 N. Safari global usage share more than doubles since Feb.. Web analytics research firm OneStat.com revealed on Monday global usage statistics for leading Web browsers. Apple saw the global usage share of its Safari browser more than double since February, according to the report. OneStat.com indicated that Safari increased its global usage share from 0.11 percent to 0.25 percent since February 2003. Based on KHTML from KDE's Konqueror open source project, Apple's Safari browser was released in January as a public beta test version. The software was downloaded more than five million times during its beta test, according to Apple. Apple released Safari 1.0 in June, along with a software development kit (SDK) that enables Mac OS X developers to embed the Safari HTML rendering engine in their own software. [MacCentral]

Apple's G4 Cube is alive and selling according to Wired News. Our original (other than a RAM upgrade) 450 MHz Cube's been on and online since we bought it almost exactly 3 years ago. Running OS X 10.2.6, it currently handles DNS, the blog content management system, a Web cam and is the Mac we use when another family member is on the big-screen G4.

Cubes can still fetch $1000 on eBay (try that with a 3-year-old PC) and a number of companies sell them with upgraded processors, RAM and video cards. The G4 Cube Blog is a good example of how markets can self-assemble around products. The trick for merchandisers is to figure out how to use blogs. One easy method would be to advertise on the blog - I'm surprised that Cube upgrade makers PowerLogix, Sonnet et al don't seem to be advertising directly on CubeOwner.com (though a reseller is), the way used Mac resellers advertise on Low-End Mac, a Mac site that includes a blog and forums.

Another way for vendors to go would be to start their own blogs - product blogs run by product managers or other knowledgeable people. It would require somebody who 'got it' about blogs, but these could link out to, and be linked back from, the afficianado sites if they did a good job and provided useful and interesting stuff (not just product pitches, though those would be OK). This might be a cheaper, and more effective medium.

Macromedia's Flash MX technologies have a blog, Safari has a blog and OS X once had a developer's blog - all of which are (or were) well-read and much linked to. The key to using blogs for marketing is having a good product, writing and maintaining a decent, useful blog and identifying a few enthusiastic users who also have blogs... Rendevouz for Windows. There is someone called Bob Bradley working on a implementation Rendezvous for Windows. It is a technology that allows self-configurating TCP/IP-networks and -services.
