Sort-of useful Python/OS X tip of the day
Using Python for something you'd normally use AppleScript for? Want to stick something on the clipboard? Use os.system('echo "%s" | pbcopy' % myText) Of course, make sure myText is clean and isn't rm -rf / or something silly like that.

Cyberduck is an open source SFTP (SSH Secure File Transfer) and FTP browser licenced under the GPL. Cyberduck features the same intuitive interface for both FTP and SFTP browsing. Cyberduck is now Mac only, with a completly rewritten user interface using the Cocoa Framework. You can open connections to multiple servers thanks to its document based interface. A simple favorites manager allows you to store frequently-used servers. Drag and drop is supported for both downloading and uploading files. Just drag the file(s) or folder from the Finder to the browser window or vice versa to start the transfer. File deletion and renaming, checking and changing of permissions is possible with a Finder-like info panel. [MacMerc.com]

A friend of mine from Apple tipped me off to a cheap-and-easy way of improving the performance of Mail.app, the mailer built into OS X. I've found that every time I send a message, Mail freezes up and the statusbar says, "Adding recipients to Address Book." Turns out that you can really cut down on this delay by forcing your Address Book to compress itself:
- Open Address Book
- Create 10 or more entries
- Delete your new entries
- Quit Address Book

MT courseware update
I’m chugging along on the MT as courseware project. It’s forcing me to brush off my rusty SQL skills, learn more about MT plugins, and really think about organization of information. All good things. I struggled for a while with the calendars, because I wanted them to link not to a specific entry (which is the default in the provided templates), but rather to a daily archive. That way all important entries for a given day—due dates, class topics/readings, in-class exercises—would be displayed together on that date. I finally found the solution on Sillybean’s blog... As always, Paolo figures out some innovative ways to use software. Gotta try this on my WallStreet and Blue and White.
1. Meetings. I went to a meeting with a friend who also has a powerbook (a 17", quite a long way from my 12"). In seconds we set up a local WiFi network and were taking notes in synch on an Hydra file. Very interesting.
2. Stuff sharing. I regulary use two Macs, a desktop and a powerbook. This means that about 50% of times what I need is on the other computer. Moving files around is easy with file sharing, but often what I need to move is just a couple of lines of html or a URL. I have started keeping a Hydra shared file permanently open on both macs and I paste there whatever I need to share. It works perfectly, highly suggested for all serial mac users.
