Marna's folks arrive this afternoon for their annual holiday visit to the (now frigid) Harlem Valley. The temperature dropped precipitously last night as some light snow moved through the area. We awoke this morning to find about an inch of the white stuff in the driveway - not enough to keep Marna from getting to daycare with the kids, but still enough that it will require us to clear it away. It has also turned very windy. Winter's here for sure.
Tomorrow evening, Marna's mother has agreed to watch the kids while we have dinner in Manhattan. Tuesday's my birthday, so Marna and I made reservations at Artisanal, a French bistro in Manhattan that boasts the City's finest array of cheeses. Really looking forward to this.
We bought our Christmas tree on Saturday and made the mistake of trying to get the kids involved in decorating it. They were (naturally) impatient, and wanted to tear right into the boxes of ornaments before I had even finished stringing the lights. I also had two egg nogs with brandy, which threw me for a loop. After Marna and the kids went off to bed, I feel asleep on the sofa and woke up disoriented at 1AM. Better lay off the nog.
This Dodger trade thing is still scraping along. The Dodgers' GM has told the Los Angeles Times that he won't pull the trigger on the Deal of the Century unless he is certain that he has other trades and free agent signings in place.
Speculation is that the Dodgers will try to sign J.D. Drew, who played last year in Atlanta, as well as former Red Sox pitcher Derek Lowe, who pitched so well in the World Series and ALCS. Those moves would go part of the way to appeasing me, but I still don't see how Drew and Kent make up for the loss of Beltre and Green. Likewise, the addition of Vazquez and Lowe would still leave the Dodgers one starter short, as it now appears that they will be saying goodbye to Odalis Perez (or is that good riddance?) and sayonara to Hideo Nomo and Kaz Ishii. With the addition of Lowe and Vazquez, assuming that happens, the rotation would look like this: Weaver, Vazquez, Lowe, Jackson and one pitcher TBD.
We'll see what shakes out.
Chelsea remained in cruise control this weekend with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Norwich City. In addition to a cracking strike from the Blues' midfielder Frank Lampard, this game featured a goal of rare beauty by Chelsea's Dutch winger Arjen Robben, who has been sensational since he returned from injury a few months ago. After receiving a pass from Robben, Lampard chipped a delicate little pass to Tiago on the edge of the area. Tiago backheeled the ball to Robben, who had continued his run. Taking it on the volley, Robben lashed an unstoppable shot past the Norwich keeper. Just about every goal he has scored this season has been of the very highest quality. What a player!
