Talking up the case for disaster plans by Adam Turner (May 4, 2004, The Sydney Morning Herald) provides details on the $10.5 million telecommunications overhaul for Victoria's Department of Natural Resources and Environment in Australia. The goals of the three year project were to connect the department's 108 sites with standardized voice and computing infrastructure, both fixed and mobile. Tanberg IP video-conferencing facilities now reach 30 offices, and the value is obvious:
"With some of the department's offices a day's drive apart, video-conferencing emerged as a practical and economical way of linking remote staff. ... Since the introduction of video-conferencing, the department has saved $25,000 a month on the running costs of its fleet of cars. Staff are also safer and more productive behind their desks rather than behind the wheel."
