The Government Reform Committee held a hearing today on the status of telecommuting in the Federal workforce. Committee Chairman Tom Davis (R-VA) kicked off the hearing with an eloquent speech on the benefits of telework, from reducing traffic, congestion, and pollution, to improving recruitment, retention, productivity, and continuity of operations for both government and industry. Many congressional attendees, including Davis, Frank Wolf (R-VA), and Henry Waxman (D-CA, who happens to be from the high traffic city of Los Angeles) expressed their frustration with the slow pace of adoption of telework within the Federal goverment. Davis threatened to follow Wolf's lead of withholding funds from under performing agencies, (see Measure encourages agencies to meet telework targets by Elizabeth Newell, GovExec June 25, 2004), by extending it to apply to all federal agencies. 5:15:28 PM ![]() comment [] trackback [] |
