Wolf Still Wants More Feds Working from Home by Steve Eldridge (WTOP Radio,  May. 25, 2004) reminds us that according to the 2001 Federal Telework Mandate, 100-percent of eligible federal employees should be teleworking at least one day a week by the end of this year. The mandate's author, Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA) intends to "add some teeth to the mandate" by reducing appropriations for non-compliant agencies.

"Wolf says that in addition to congestion and air quality relief, teleworking is a valuable tool to keep the government running in the event of an emergency. He was surprised that the Department of Homeland Security only has 2-percent compliance."

I predict we'll finally start seeing goverment agencies stepping up. While being considerate, envionmentally aware and, well, just plain smart are great goals, nothing talks louder than money.

Oregon's governor Ted Kulongoski recently released a letter he sent to President Bush, in which he writes "This latest oil ‘crisis’ should demonstrate that we must work towards the increased use of transit, telework, efficient fuel use, and choice of fuel-efficient vehicles.”
