Blogging makes further business inroads

Even Bill Gates has become a blogging evangelist.  BBC News reports on Bill Gates comments about the role of blogging in business during remarks at the CEO Summit at Microsoft, where he alleged that bloggin "..makes it very easy to communicate. "  There are 700 Microsoft past and present employees involved in blogging.  Some of these blogs are quite well known throughout the world. The article also reports the speculation that Microsoft will soon enter the blogging software market.  As another example, Chad Dickerson at InfoWorld has been writing about how they are using blogging internally at InfoWorld to improve communications and make work more enjoyable.  Jon Udell, also of Infoworld, writes about blogs as a way to enhance internal project communication.  Dickerson and Udell echo others that contend that blogging has the potential of achieving the objectives of knowledge management so long sought by business and government agencies, mainly because it is so easy to post thoughts and comments in an organized fashion.

The Search for Performance Measures

Legislators, the presss, and the public at large frequently assume that is is possible to express the contibution of a specific program or technology in criminal justice by how much it reduces crime.  In searching for a public measure of return on investment, it seems logical to say that a given project has reduced crime by x%.  However, it is generally impossible to make this measure and relate it to a given project.  Actvities can only be measured with respect to the outcomes that are directly influenced.  Other, more direct, measures have to be created for evaluating the contibution of specific technology and projects.  There is a white paper now on this blog on "Performance Measures"  that explains why the measure of crime reduction is not reasonable or useful.
