RFID applications move to help justice agencies

One of the fastest growing tecnologies to sweep the commercial world has been the introduction of radio frequency identification (RFID).  As major chains have developed applications for inventory tracking, the devices have gone down in price and have become easier to implement.

Now the criminal justice system has discovered this technology.  In an unusual application, the DeKalb County courts are using RFID to keep track of the manilla file folders that float around the justice system.   The tendency for such files to get lost or mis-filed upon return will be reduced substantially with this technology.

The public and privacy advocates are concerned about the use of RFID technology even on prodcts leaving stores, fearing that the tags could be used to monitor people's whereabouts.  States have attempted legislation to require the tags to be removed when items leave the store.  It will be interesting to watch the spread of this technology and the applications that will emerge in the justice field
