CIA says White House knew claim was false
According to a BBC report the White House was aware that the claims that Iraq sought uranium from from Niger were were probably false. Even so, President Bush cited them in his State-of-the-Union speech to help justify a preemptive attack on Iraq.

Some truth comes out
The Bush administration has more or less acknowledged the misinformation it dispensed regarding the Iraq-Niger uranium connection. Both the New York Times and the Washington Post report. However, Tony Blair and his team do not seem ready to admit the information was bogus in spite of the findings of the Parliamentary commission. See the BBC report. This has opened up something of a split between the US and the UK on this point. There has been much more public concern in the UK than in the US and prime Minister Blair is still on the defensive. For the complete report from the Parliamentary Select Committee go here. In contrast, the news article about the Bush administration's admissions in the San Jose Mercury this morning did not make the front page.
