The issue that won't go away

The BBC comments on the recent US admission that the report that Iraq sought Uranium from Niger was bogus keeps the WMD issue in the news. (And don't forget about the aluminum centrifuge tubes that were not.) "But - unlike in Britain - it is also the one that never seems to ignite into an all-out front-page full blown controversy - or at least not yet."  the BBC News reporter forsees further troubles ahead for the Prime Minister's.

Estimates for the cost and size of the American occupation force recently doubled to $3.9 billion per month. This does not include reconstruction costs by the way. The duration of the occupation looks to be on the order of five to ten years. See the Washington Post report on congressional questioning of Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld regarding troop and cost estimates. The New York Times focuses on Rumsfreld's comments on the doubled cost estimates. Yahoo reports that General Tommy Franks estimates that the current troop level will be required for at least four more years.  And as American casualties increase in the 'postwar' reconstruction, we have to ask how many of the other assumptions and expectations about the outcome of the war are suspect as well.
