From yellow cake to hot potato
News reports regarding who approved what in President Bush's state-of-the-union speech about the bogus claims of Iraqi attampts to buy uranium from Africa. The NY Times reports that the CIA reviewed the President's speech and did not object to the claim. At the same time the Washington Post reports that the CIA was asking the Brits to drop the claim that Iraq had sought to buy Uranium in Africa. Looks like the CIA will take the bullet for this one.
Sure enough, the CIA's Tenet has stepped out to make himself a target. The President's state-of-the-union speech was carefully worded to attribute the source of the uranium information to the UK. The President said the US had "learned" from the UK that Iraq had sought to buy yellowcake from an Arican country. By including the reference in his speech the President gave it credibility and validity. There is enough evidence to show that the administration knew full well that the information had been discredited. Attributing the information to the British left an escape clause. Now Tenet is saying that he should have objected to the inclusion of the reference and had it removed. Maybe he did object and we don't know about it. We'll have to see what unfolds.
