First call to end the occupation of Iraq

The bombing of the UN headquarters on Tuesday comes on top of the bombing of the Jordanian embassy, the sabotage of the main oil pipeline to Turkey and the regular attacks on US soldiers. These are not signs of welcome. What happened to the liberator's welcome and the path to democracy we were told to expect? Why bomb the UN? The BBC report by Paul Reynolds sheds some light from a historical perspective. He says: "Foreign powers have always found Iraq ungovernable." Read the BBC report.  Some had hoped that more UN participation would help stabilize the situation and provide a smoother path to a democratic government in Iraq. Apparently even the UN is unwelcome. Where does that leave the US?

Bob Herbert in a NY Times editorial this morning states the situation succintly. "Now we're lodged in Iraq, in the midst of the most volatile region of the world, and the illusion of a quick victory followed by grateful Iraqis' welcoming us with open arms has vanished. Instead of democracy blossoming in the desert, we have the reality of continuing bloodshed and heightened terror — the payoff of a policy spun from fantasies and lies." Read the entire editorial.
