France and Germany reject the latest US proposal to the UN Security Council
Reuters reports on the latest reaction from France and Germany to the most recent US proposal to broaden the US led coalition and expand the UN mandate in Iraq. Other countries are not so eager to join the United States occupational forces in Iraq. The Reuters reports quotes French President Jaques Chirac as saying: ' "We are very, very far removed from having a resolution in front of us which we can agree to..."
The situation gets more complicated as the US tries to induce countries such as Turkey to contribute troops. Reuters reports that "Newly appointed Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said his government would not welcome troops from neighboring countries because they might meddle in Iraq's affairs." This would apply very specifically to Turkey.
Since the bombing of the UN hedquarters in Baghdad, other countries undoubtedly will be very cautious about committing their troops. How the Polish troops fare after recently taking over a major sector in Iraq will probably set the tone for other nations.
