Won't have a lot of time on-line between now and Sunday so I wanted to get my votes in for the New Weblog Showcase.  Spent 45 min or so skimming this week's entries.  Pretty slim pickin's ...

Only one entry gets my whole hearted endorsement:  Occasional Subversion's post on biotechnology.  Well written, interesting, and I happen to agree with a lot of it.    Case in point:

At the moment, biotechnology is inherently anti-democratic because it is controlled by massive international corporations. I'm glad there are protests in Sacramento, even if I disagree with some of the fundamental arguments of the protestors, because what the various executives and scientists at the convention are discussing is how they can use their biotechnology to increase food supplies in disadvantaged countries. A noble and worthy effort on a first look, but let's think about what they're really proposing is a kind of colonialism which would make disadvantaged countries reliant upon crops patented and owned by the corporations. The convention is less about humanitarian aid than about increasing profits and controlling market share.

And, I would add that "reliance on crops patented and owned by the corporations" sounds like a death-knell for smaller famers everywhere.  Agribusiness has already poisoned our land and pushed small and family farms out of business in this country, I owuld hate to see that unleashed on the planet at large.
