That's the word from Larry Martochko, of Larry & Jan's Resort
in Fremont. All the rain we got here in Wisconsin in June really
slowed things down on lakes and rivers. The Wolf was high for a
month and many people just plain stopped fishing it.
"We lost a month of business," Larry told me today. "And there's no way to recoup that."
The rain not only flooded the river, it kept water temps cooler than
normal, but now that the river has come back down and the skies have
dried out a bit, the fishing is great. Larry says the bluegills
are just now moving into the shallows to spawn, about a month behind
schedule!
"Fish the wood anywhere along the river banks and you'll catch bluegills," Larry says.
The walleye and northern pike are also hitting, and some people are
still catching white bass in good numbers. Fish backwaters and
cover anywhere in the river for pike. Anglers are taking some
nice walleyes early in the morning (dawn until 8 a.m. most days)
casting perch-colored Shad Raps under docks right in town, Larry says.
The Wolf is known mostly for its April walleye run and May white bass
run. Few people know that walleyes are active there all summer,
usually in deeper holes and over gravel, where you can catch them on
jigs and minnows or crawlers. Right now, however, they're still
quite active near shore, so go get 'em.
