OK, just one more.  Here's the link to an incredible story of a deer hunter who took seven months to recover the buck he shot with a bow last fall.  Jim Lee wrote the piece, which you can read by clicking here.

Wasn't that howitzer hunt a hoot? What? You didn't look at it? Go back now and take a look at that site. This guy is way over the edge. I guess there's more than one way to make sure a deer is down for the count!

Meanwhile, Kevin shared this rumor, to be substantiated in tomorrow's Green Bay Press-Gazette: " Yes, you can put a strong rumor in there of a 36+ lb. brown trout not much more than a Paul Bunyan-cast off the piers at Algoma (taken in shallow water off a charter boat) ... it will run in the Press-Gazette tomorrow morning ..." The fish was caught today, apparently. Kevin has a state-record fish magnet, as he has been present at the weigh-in of the last three state-record browns (Algoma, 35.11 and Kewaunee, 35.12, both 1996; Algoma, 36.56, 2004), plus a state-record steelhead (Algoma, 27.11, 1997), past two chinooks (Algoma, 43-3, 1983; Sturgeon bay, 44.92, 1994), past couple pinks (including a 6+ in 1999 from Algoma) and a pinook (pink/chinook natural cross, 8.34, Algoma, 2001).

Now what does that list tell you about where to find big fish in Lake Michigan?

Anyway, check out tomorrow's Press-Gazette, or just log back onto this site and read all about it! Despite the weird weather (I have had three charter trips canceled myself due to weather this summer.), Lake Michigan is producing some whopper kings and great mixed-bag catches this year. If you haven't been out, there's another month or two of good fishing left before the charter boats hang it up for the season.

This one falls nicely into the "Now I've seen everything" department.  This morning, ever-alert outdoor writer Kevin Naze sent me this link: www.buckstix.com/HowitzerHunt.htm.  I looked at the site and had a good laugh, then realized this guy is dead serious!  I figured you would get a kick out of this, too, but when I tried to log on this evening, my browser could't find the website.  I don't know if the site is down (maybe the law caught up with Mr. Howitzer) or what's going on, but I do know I DID NOT IMAGINE THIS.

Anyway, in a nutshell, the site set forth everything you would need to know to hypothetically shoot a deer with a mountain howitzer, a Civil War-era cannon that fired a 12-pound projectile, or (and here's where it gets interesting) a load of canister shot consisting of a tin can full of 1.25-ounce lead musket balls (.69 cal.).  The musket balls are about the same size as a 12-ga. deer slug, so if you happen to hit a deer with a couple of them, it looks like you shot it with a 12-gauge.

The site goes on to suggest how you might camouflage the cannon, set it up in a safe place so as not to shoot other hunters or by-standers, and even dissimulate your cannon hunt with a pocket full of 12-ga. empties...

Hey, hold the presses!  Kevin just e-mailed me to say the site is back up, so don't take my word for it, go check it out for yourself!

(Don't wait until tomorrow, as this site may disappear again and this time for good.  This is too funny and just too real not to be for real.  Kids, don't try this at home!!)
