As soon as I report this, the weather will probably change, but fishing
has been phenomenal in and near the harbors this week, thanks to a
string of mild days with west or south winds. I taped a charter
trip with Capt. Ken Poludnianyk of Jack's Charter Service
and first mate (get this) Terry Small Tuesday. After a quick
geneology review, Terry and I decided we are not related. Too
bad. I wouldn't mind a cousin who runs a charter boat.
Our guests on that trip were Dawn and Tom Reuter and their 13-year-old
son, David. We let Tom catch the first salmon so Dawn and Dave
could see how it's done, but a second rod tripped and father and son
were into a double to start the afternoon. They managed to keep
the fish from tangling lines or snapping off on a downrigger cable, and
we had our first two in the box.
Mom was next, with a bigger king, and an hour later I reeled in a twin
to her 15-pounder. David caught the biggest fish of the trip, an
honest 20-pounder. We caught about 10 mature kings, all on
J-plugs and similar baits.
The Reuters were happy campers, and we got a dynamite segment for the new season of Outdoor Wisconsin.
