What do Wisconsin hunters have in common with hunters in Sweden, and
how do we differ? Dr. Tom Heberlein, retired UW rural sociology
professor, has written an interesting article on that subject and more,
which was published in the Fall 2000 issue of Sweden & America.
Now, since I doubt you have encountered this magazine in your dentist's
waiting room, I asked Tom if I could post it on my website. He
graciously agreed, so "The gun, the dog and the thermos" is the latest "Guest Shot."
Check it out, along with the links my webmaster Les Booth has
created. I think you'll find Dr. Tom's observations very
interesting. I don't think you'll find an analog to the Boone
& Crockett Club or Wisconsin Buck & Bear Club in Sweden!
Read the article and learn why.

To read the latest "Fish Report" from retired game warden John Walker,
just click on "Stories" over to the right ---> and then click
on "On pats, bears and stuff like that."
John's latest book, The Old School, is available online from Dan's Mall. You can also order John's previous seven books. In fact, buy the first seven and you'll get The Old School free.
For a taste of John's humor, check out his latest "Fish Report."

An e-mail I received last night from Larry Van Veghel, secretary and media director of the Wisconsin Council of Sport Fishing Organizations, highlights some current goings-on that affect fishermen and fishing. Here's the message in its entirety:
There are plenty of things going on in the fishing world, but the news
never gets to anglers. Newsline helps, but it's not being printed in
hardcopy. You have to look at the WCSFO site. We must send this news
to other anglers, club members, and the WCSFO breezy@netnet.net John Durben, the
WCSFO Vice-president.
Here are some things:
They are arguing about the weed harvester on Pewaukee Lake. It went
into use this year. It's supposed to be used to cut back on invasive
weeds. Of course, we know it is cutting all weeds. The problem with
weed cutters is that the cut weeds float and replant themselves somewhere
else. The cutter is currently being painted. While this is going on,
the barge is being parked at the Lakeview public launch. The Woman's Club
of Pewaukee doesn[base ']t like this because they are working to restore native
habitat. Hooray for them! They say this barge could potentially
damage a shoreline the group is working on. For more info., check the
Sept., 16, 2004 issue of the Lake Country Reporter.
From the same paper, and on the same page (24A), there is a symposium
coming up regarding aquatic lake plant problems. The Wisconsin Association
of Lakes (WAL) will look into Eurasian milfoil problems. This will take
place on Friday, Oct. 3, a Friday, at the Wintergreen Resort and Conference
Center in Wisconsin Dells. For more information or to register, call Susan
Tesarik at (608) 662-0923 or (800) 542-5253 (in Wisconsin) or e-mail wal@wisconsinlakes.org. Their
website is www.wisconsinlakes.org.
Registration for the whole day is $40.00 before Oct. 1. After that date,
it's $45.00. There will be 12 speakers. It would be nice if the
angling public was in attendance. Otherwise we have no voice on the waters
we fish!
Also, in the same paper, and on page 16A, there is a water study being
conducted on Pine, Beaver, and North Lakes in Waukesha County. The Village
of Chenequa officials are seeking a grant from the Wisconsin DNR to help
pay for this study. The reason for this study, per the Village President
Bryce Styza is that they want the study done before the construction on the
Village Square shopping center on Hwy. 16 and 83 so they can compare water
quality.
From the same article, Kelly Smith wrote, "The USGS is conducting extensive
water quality testing for the city of Delafield to help identify sources of
siltation and pollution in Lake Nagawicka."
I hope this helps keep you up-to-date on some lake news. This is an
example of what is going on without the input of anglers. WCSFO, fishing
clubs, fishing equipment businesses, bait shops, and others should get
involved.
Sincerely,
L.A. Van Veghel
WCSFO secretary & media director
