Here's a report on the Strawberry Creek chinook harvest operation from DNR fisheries biologist Paul Peeters.  See my post for 9/24 for more info, or ready my article on my website to learn more.  If you've never seen this operation, it's well worth the trip!

Here's Paul's message:

9/29/04

Hi all:

Just got back from the pond.  As scheduled, we harvested chinook at Strawberry Creek today and sent fertilized chinook eggs to Bayfield and Wild Rose Fish Hatcheries.  We harvested nearly 1200 chinook today and are up to about 3000 fish processed for the season.  We turned the pump on yesterday afternoon and that triggered a large run of chinook last night.

The next scheduled activity at Strawberry Creek will be a thinning of chinook on Friday October 1st.  The chinook are coming up so strong that we will need to thin some out so the rest of the fish will make it through the weekend in good shape.  On Friday we will assess how many fish are in the pond and try to take out as many as we think are necessary to have enough fish for Monday, but not too many for the pond to hold.  On Friday we will be weighing, and measuring the fish, harvesting the eggs for the contractor and sending fish carcasses to the Pantry and the fertilizer plant, but, we will NOT have the hatchery staff there taking eggs for hatchery production.  Because I don't know how many fish will be in the pond on Friday morning, I don't know yet how many we will be taking out or how long we will be working.

On Monday October 4th, we have a harvest AND hatchery egg take planned.  We will get going by 9 AM and should be working through noon or later.

If you are planning on bringing a school group please advise so that someone will be available to talk to your group.  Please let me know your approximate time of arrival and the number and age of your students.

If you are planning on coming to work as a volunteer also please advise so that I can plan to have the appropriate number of staff at the facility.

Paul

but since it had not hit us, we all went back to sleep.
