Jerry Solsrud, founder of the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association, and probably the most rabid waterfowler I know, just got back from his annual duck/goose/crane safari in Canada.  Here's his report:

I'm back, aren't you thrilled?

We had tough hunting conditions part of the time due to continual rains.   And damn cold conditions last week - like 18 degrees in the morning.  But lots of water around which equaled lots of ducks - everywhere. Not as many geese and cranes though.

Bottom line for the 3 week trip (two days not hunted due to rain, and of course never on Sunday) was:

zero cranes vs. 14 last year

13.7 white geese per hunting day vs 11.4/day last year

and about the same number of dark geese and ducks as last year

The old timers tell me that this is the way it used to be with hoards of ducks around, but they had no snow geese in those days.

It sure is going to make the WI waterfowling look awfully tame this year.

Total expenditures for fuel was 1705$US and 1200$US for lodging . Still at these costs I had no lack of competition from other hunters. From the looks of their equipment, money will never be an issue.

I've been too busy doing things this month to blog about them, but I hope to have the time during this trip.

I'm currently in Alexandria, MN, attending the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers annual conference at Arrowwood Resort.  Then it's on to SD for pheasants and sharptails and then on to ND for ducks.

I'll be reporting as often as possible on my "On the Road"page.  To see it, just click "On the Road" over to the right --->
