OK, so this should have been posted three weeks ago, but it wasn't, for
a variety of reasons that have to do with visiting three sets of
relatives in a week, while towing a camper, dealing with an ailing cat,
turkey hunting every morning at 5:00, scouting each afternoon and
leaving the computer cable behind at one stop.
I only remember the main points, which is just as well. On Tue.,
May 3, Mike & I set up watching a gas line ROW and heard several
toms gobbling at dawn. One came in from behind and made me as I
turned my head to decide if I should turn around and face into the
woods. He was in range when I saw him, but he had already spotted
me turning. Lessons: 1. A gobbling bird is often
closer than he sounds. 2. He can pinpoint your location
from your calling.
Wed., we took the day off and joined brother Pete, Mike's son Adam and
Dave Doyle on Chautauqua Lake for a go at crappies. Dave and a
friend had caught 40 in an hour on Saturday. On Wed., however, a
cold front came through, bringing with it rain and a drop in lake
temperature. We caught two bluegills, two small perch and one
crappie for our efforts. Marked fish over the same bar Dave had
fished Saturday, but they would not bite.
Success at last on Thu. Read next post for details.
