Bush state contests
Posted here Monday, March 15, 2004 at 7:02:55 PM

Expect a lot of presidential trips in the next eight months to these 18 states:

Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Why? Because, as Dan Balz and Jim VandeHei write in The Washington Post, those are the battleground states. All the rest are either solidly red or blue -- not even in play in 2004.

As we try to understand the Bush admin, things like this help understand but not build confidence.

Wolf Blitzer asked Donald Rumsfeld last night if we should have given the UN inspectors more time. Rumsfeld answered, "Well, the U.N. inspectors were not in there. The U.N. inspectors were out."

Huh? Can't these guys even be bothered to make up decent lies anymore? They were only out because we told them to leave so that we could start the war.

Americans follow jobs overseas!!

Overheard..

*** The Labor Department says the number of people with college degrees who have been out of work 6 months or more has risen 300% (the report we read did not say over what period of time). American firms are hiring... but not in the U.S. IBM is hiring in Calcutta, but not in White Plains. GM is hiring in Bangalore, but not in Detroit. What's a man to do?

Robert Dunn, a 55-year-old American information technology specialist, is looking for work - in India. According to the CNN report, more and more Americans are following their jobs overseas. Indian firms find Americans very useful for managing relations with their U.S. customers.
