Mr. Goss's nomination will now go before the Senate, and Mr. Goss said today that he looked forward to the process.

But political analysts said the Senate might well seize on the nomination as an opportunity to voice renewed criticism of the Bush administration's handling of intelligence, which could prove damaging to Mr. Bush in this election year.

The vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator John D. Rockefeller, Democrat of West Virginia, has already taken issue with the Goss nomination.

In June, reacting to press reports that Mr. Goss was being considered, he said he believed the appointment of a politician, "any politician, from either party, would be a mistake."

Is this also an attempt to make florida look good? How connected to the admin is he? Would he be a heavy in any problems with the election? Will he help deliver Bin Ladin and Northe Korea before the election?
