Urban Educ8r: A Wickerblog
This weblog is dedicated primarily to the discussion of Education issues and policies, as well as to chronicling the author's experiences as an inner-city school teacher. These days, the education discussion is too much in the hands of ignorant politicians merely doing what they need to gain re-election, and not enough in the hands of knowledgable professionals with first hand experience.

State by State SAT comparisons...mean nothing

One week after they published the dreaded list of "failing schools" that didn't make their "adequate yearly progress" requirements, today the Atlanta Journal Constitution plastered the front page with the astounding news that Georgia, for the second year in a row ranked 50th among the states in SAT scores. Whoopee. Anyone who knows their facts, knows that such a "statistic" is far from a valid comparison of school systems among the states. For example, in some states, like Georgia, everyone and their pet takes the SAT. Including many non-college-bound students. Do I need to explain that this logically lowers the state average? Some other states only give the SAT to the select few who are definitely college bound. Yet the newspapers of the nation will go on and publish these kinds of things offering them as some kind of real sign of disaster, of course to create a panic among the voting populace. Can you say politics? It certainly worked at this time last year for new Gov. Sonny Perdue. Who will it benefit this time around?
