Just days following the nation's governors' summit on high schools, my
state, Georgia, is holding a conference on high school reform. Every
high school in the state was asked to send a team. Our principal was
there. So, what do we need ot do to raise the success of high schools
in the state with the second lowest SAT scores and a horrendous
drop-out rate. My list would include:
retaining vocational education programs as an option
reducing class sizes
raising the teaching profession
attracting and retaining good qualified teachers--some money adn creativity have to go into this
initiating work-school programs
whole new kinds of real-world relevant courses
Shorter school days and longer school year (year round with scattered breaks)
Or, 4 day weeks and year-round
mandatory parental involvement
Hmm, I'm just getting started.....
