Just Wait until Longhorn!

Why is it that Microsoft's solution to problems is always "Wait until Longhorn"(or whatever is coming down the line at some future not totally specified time from Microsoft).

That from Microsoft senior security strategist Phillip Reitinger's testimony to Congress on computer security issues. Surely this is an idiotic response- Microsoft and its "security strategist" should know better. The problems are now -- solutions are needed now -- not in the "Longhorn timeframe". Even if solving the problems at some future date was a reasonable response, I have absolutely no faith that Microsoft or Mr. Reitinger will solve these problems in Longhorn or any future Microsoft product. I think the "Trustworthy Computing" initiative is a (perhaps unintential) fraud -- lip service paid to security (as long as it doesn't affect Microsoft's plans or bottom line).

I still think that making Microsoft and other software vendors financially responsible (or partially responsible) for breaches of security in their products will stir them to action. Solutions to problems in technology are not always more, newer technology. The current situation allows the kind of complacency that Reitinger and Microsoft appear to have towards computing security.
