Apple to compete vigourously with Microsoft Dell HP in the near future?

Reading this article by Cringely this morning and seeing all the discussion on Boot Camp, Apple's beta software allowing Windows to boot on Apples got me to thinking about what exactly is going on here. A wild speculation - could Apple be preparing to do battle on both the hardware and operating system fronts?

It gets more interesting by the day as I thought it might.

What would happen if Apple split into two separate companies (three if you count iPod) -- one that sold the MacOS OEM or directly to consumers to run on any Intel hardware out there-- competing head on with Microsoft, and another selling Mac hardware (to run either MacOS or Windows) to consumers and businesses competing head on with HP, Dell et al. Flush with iPod cash Apple might just be ready for such a bold move. Could Jobs pull this off? Would Apple lose or gain?

The only company not in the potential sights might be Intel -- or will Apple, Dell, HP make moves towards using AMD to stir the pot there as well?
