Why do Twitter "upgrades" always seem like "downgrades"

No doubt about it Twitter is a useful and addictive service.

But there is something terribly wrong. Every time there is an "upgrade" (that normally means an improvement in service or features or both)it seems like the service has a downgrade. There have been several attempts at "upgrades" over the last few weeks. None that I noticed produced any perceptible improvement - in fact it seems to have gotten steadily worse.

Dave Winer says: "Their pockets are deep enough so they can afford to keep going for quite some time". I don't know -- if they continue at this pace they will "twitter" away their future.

So what is the issue? Do they have inadequate infrastructure? Is the technology on which the product is based flawed? Do they have a lack of technical talent? Perhaps just bad luck?

Perhaps they should dig into those deep pockets and come up with something that will solve this problem?
