Did a few things at home, but was generally sick with a cold/cough today. Researched more of the SC hiking areas for a upcoming trip to the Myrtle Beach area. Also got back on www.geocaching.com to start checking out some local and sites on the way to the beach. These geocaching trips are a lot of fun with kids- like a real treasure hunt with your GPS as the map.

We did make it to tonights hockey game since it was the annual "Bobble Head Doll" giveaway night, as the kids were set on getting these things. We got a Trevor Johnson doll tonight, and got a treat in seeing the Zooperstars perform between periods. They are always good, and beat dodgeball events any night.

In checking email and news on getting back home, I ran across this article on BoingBoing.net about a guy who tore up a credit card application, then taped it back together and still got a card. He even changed some details to make it look more suspicious.

This confirms a few things to me. Credit Card companies are stupid for not looking for exactly this behavior to cut down on fraud. It also shows that it is worth doing the shredding I do. Seems like these guys will do anything to increase business, no matter what the chance of fraud. I would sure think a torn up application says something.

One thing I'd like to see is the ability for the consumer to STOP the flow of convenience checks sent along with credit card statements. This is another invitation for fraud. I asked to have it stopped by calling their 800 number and got no where. Like I said, these companies play the statistics and dont do anything until the numbers get above some threshold.

SEE ARTICLE FROM BoingBoing.net here:

Guy gets credit card using torn up application. Mark Frauenfelder: Rob Cockerham of Cockeyed.com says:

I wasn't sure if just tearing a Credit Card application into tiny bits was good enough to prevent dumpster-diving theft, so I did a test.

I tore one up, then taped it back together again, filled it out with a DIFFERENT address and CELL number.

Sure enough, in four weeks I was rewarded with a shiny new card with a $5,000 limit.

Now I guess I'll go buy a shredder with this card.
