Brian Duff's Weblog

 24 July 2003

We've been using Wiki inside the JDev team recently to discuss and plan so-called "look and feel" UI issues for various parts of the product, such as the UML modelers.

It's working out pretty well as an alternative to the way we used to carry out such discussions. Previously, you'd occasionally come in to work and check your email only to be confronted by a whopping great big heated email thread about a UI idea or issue. The trouble with these extended email discussions was always that there was never any clear resolution. They often trailed off into two or more groups with polar opposite views about the way something should work.

Wiki's really quite simple. I think that's a big part of the reason why it works. It's a sort of whiteboard for the internet generation - and anyone can scribble on it and contribute to the discussion. All changes are logged, and you can quickly see the history of changes to any wiki topic to get an idea of how a resolution was reached over time.

The Heap Window and the Classes Window have to be two of the most overlooked pieces of functionality in JDeveloper's excellent debugger, and I've been using them heavily in the last couple of weeks to investigate memory leaks for the upcoming 9.0.5 release. I find the Heap Window even more useful than than the profiler for tracking down memory issues at runtime.... Finding Memory Leaks with JDeveloper's Debugger has the full story....

So I decided to try this weblog thing....

... In the spirit of "everyone else is doing it", and never being one to turn down an opportunity to go with the crowd, here we are. My very first blog entry....
