Sweden greets the new year with
a day of mourning to honor 59 Swedes confirmed dead and 3,559
missing, while Italy raises its death toll from the earthquake and
tsunami disaster to 18 and says more than 600 Italians had not been
found.

Breakdown of Tsunami Death Toll by Nation (AP).
At least 123,184 people were
killed in eleven countries in southern Asia and East Africa from the
massive earthquake and tsunamis on Dec. 26, according to official
figures.

Veteran British journalist Robert Whymant is now confirmed dead. He was
last seen alive on a beach resort in Sri Lanka where he and his wife
Minako were vacationing. Mrs. Whymant on Saturday told the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan,
where Robert had been a member for 30 years, that she had positively
identified her husband's body. Whymant had been reported from Asia
since1974 for the Guardian, Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph and The
Times. Most recently, he was working with Australia's Courier
Mail. He was also the author of Stalin's Spy: Richard Sorge and
the Tokyo Ring, published in 1996.
